 LLMEA Composition Contest

Lancaster-Lebanon Music Educators Association - COMPOSITION CONTEST

The Lancaster Lebanon Music Educators Association is proud to announce the 5th annual LLMEA New Composition Contest!
 
The goal of this contest is to generate new literature for school band, choir, and orchestra. For 2021/2022 we are accepting compositions for CHORUS (Grade 2-3 Difficulty Level, SAB or SSA voicing). The winning composer receives a prize of $1000.

Rules
  1. Entries must be emailed to LLMEA no later than December 15, 2021 to: compcontest@llmea.org. 
  2. Submissions must be an original composition for band no earlier than 2019.  No transcriptions or arrangements are allowed.
  3. No time maximum/minimum length for entries.
  4. No restriction on the amount of movements.
  5. One submission per composer per year.
  6. Candidates should submit their entries via email.  Submissions should be in pdf format and should contain the full score and an mp3/midi file.  The score should also contain the date of composition.
  7. Candidates must submit a biography with their composition.
  8. Receipt of entries will be verified by an email reply from the committee chair.
  9. After the final round of judging in March, the winner will be notified by a member of LLMEA.  The winning piece and composer will be recognized at the annual LLMEA Honors Banquet in April.  All LLMEA member ensembles will have access to perform the piece.  Once the winner is announced the composer will supply the committee chair with a set of parts (pdf files).  Submissions will be evaluated and scored based on:
    • Form
    • Craftsmanship in wind/percussion composing
    • Compatible with the skill of the ensemble
    • Consistent in quality throughout entirety
    • Reflects ingenuity in development
    • Musical and lyrical validity

​The winning composer will receive a prize of $1000.

The committee and LLMEA reserves the option of withholding the award.  LLMEA retains the right to discontinue this competition.
All rights to the work, including copyright and publisher negotiation, remain with the composer, except for performance rights by all LLMEA member ensembles.

The Lancaster-Lebanon Music Educators Association is pleased to announce the winner of the 2019-2020 Composition Contest is Mr. Thomas W. Daugherty, with his original composition entitled A Day on the African Savanna. 

The Lancaster-Lebanon Music Educators Association is pleased to announce the winner of the 2018-2019 Composition Contest is Mr. Francis J. Caravella, with his original composition entitled A Thief in the Bazaar. ​

These pieces, and all of our previous contest winner's pieces are available to all LLMEA Member Schools.

The Composition Contest Committee and the LLMEA Executive Board would would like to extend its sincere appreciation to all composers who submitted their work for the contest.
